Elizabeth's Gift of The Holy Spirit

Updated: Dec 4, 2021

December 5, 2021 Scripture: Luke 1:39-45 "At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” Elizabeth knew Mary was carrying The Son of God because of the Holy Spirit. How does one become filled with the Holy Spirit? By drinking in A LOT of it--by spending time seeking The Holy Spirit. By praying to filled!

Elizabeth knew the Spirit. She probably became especially acquainted when she spent five months in seclusion prior to Mary's arrival. (Luke 1:24) Zechariah, Elizabeth's husband was mute. Because God designed us to be in relation with one another, it makes great sense that Elizabeth and the Holy Spirit spent time in fellowship. By the time Mary came to visit, Elizabeth had been pregnant for at least six months. John Piper suggests looking at Ephesians 5:18-21 to discover the evidence of being filled with The Spirit. Verse 19 suggests being filled with the Holy Spirit brings about a song-like joy/praises. Verse 20 talks about gaining unending gratitude for all things. Lastly, verse 21 mentions wanting to put the needs and desires of others above our own.

Do you have a relationship with the Holy Spirit? How will you continue to grow that relationship this year?
