December 21, 2021 Scripture: Matthew 2:1-12
In many ways Herod was the villain needed to set the stage for the oppressing times Israel was facing. He was needed for the mirroring of the passover in Egypt. He was needed, too, to reveal so much of our own hearts.
Today and every day, there is a battle for the throne of your heart/soul. Our human nature causes us to want to be the king on the throne of our own hearts. This is not only a message for unbelievers, it is for those who call themselves Christians too if we are honest with ourselves. It is in all of our nature to think we know better than God in some area of our life. This is the ultimate battle of pride vs. servanthood.
Herod loved the throne. He stopped at nothing to protect it.
What sin will you to anything to protect?
The love of money and stuff? We like our comforts. Entertainment, goods, food...
We love our savings for the future. Safety nets, college funds, and stocks and bonds. We love the power and sense of control it provides. What if that was all snatched away? It could happen!
The ancient gods are active even today. Our modern world has simply changed the names and still offer up pleasures in all it's forms. But, we were all created with a God shaped hole. Nothing else will satisfy that deep chasm within our soul.
