December 14, 2021 Genesis 1:14-15 "And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so." Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars..." Luke 21:25 Before newspapers, television and the iPhone, people would gaze at the stars for entertainment. God takes credit for the constellations in the oldest book of the Bible (Job 38:31-32); God knows where each star is at all times. Nothing is out of place and he knows them each by name. (Isaiah 40:26), and David tells us the stars communicate (Psalm 19:1-4). The Magi understood this. Was anyone else paying attention? Here is the proof that the sky gives us truth and news. In Romans, Paul is answering a rhetorical question--'Did the Jews know the Messiah had come?' His answer is:
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did:
“Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” -Romans 10:17 In other words, the Jews knew the Messiah had come because the stars told them. Something spectacular must have happened in the sky to have such confidence (Larson, 2007). We must be careful here, however, to not get this confused with the stars governing or ruling our lives. There is only one ruler--God alone. It is the difference between astronomy and astrology. Be careful here! Look to the Creator not the creation.
In The Star of Bethlehem Frederick A. Larson uses The Bible and Astronomy software to discuss the star of Bethlehem. He is a lawyer by trade, so he does a VERY good job presenting his findings. If you don't have 70 minutes to dedicate towards watching the documentary, please, take just 2 minutes to watch this video: The Star of Bethlehem Bonus Material about where the stars and constellations were at the time of Jesus' death. It is absolutely marvelous. God has woven together tapestries in the stars and shows us what he wants us to understand and know even now. We are so loved! He pursues us without end.
